Buying a car guide

There are plenty of options to consider when buying a car, from the engine size, a new or second hand model and the colour!

Going down the new or used car road can be a difficult decision too, but we’ve taken a closer look at both to help you make the right choice for you.

New Car

Do your research

  • The more information you have, the better equipped you are to make the right decision. Jump online and research the car you’re looking for so you’ll know what to expect. Websites like Redbook and GoAuto will give you an idea of the average cost.
  • When you’re ready to walk into the dealerships, arm yourself with your research. Write down what you want so you can ensure you get exactly what you want.

Shop around

  • Compare the market and take a look at what’s on offer at different dealerships – and don’t be afraid to negotiate on price.
  • If one dealer has the car you want but a competitor has the offer you’re after (such as warranty offers or finance), ask the dealer if they will match it – it never hurts to ask.

Money matters

  • Set yourself a budget and include all the extra costs you’ll need to pay like insurance and registration.
  • Ask the dealer to give you a written ‘on the road’ price, or if you’re trading in, a change-over price.
  • If you’re taking out a loan, have a chat with your financial adviser to make sure you don’t borrow beyond your means.

Insurance

  • When you find your dream car, you’ll need to organise car insurance before you drive it home.

Used Car

Do your research

  • We’ve already mentioned this, but it really does pay to do your research regardless of whether you’re buying a new or used car.  Other websites to check out include carsales.com.au and carsguide.com.au
  • Set yourself a budget and include all the extra costs you’ll need to pay like insurance and registration.

Inspect the car

  • Once you’ve found a potential car, make a checklist and inspect the vehicle. Things to look out for include:
  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), registration number and engine number: make sure these are identical to those on the registration papers.
  • Evidence of previous major crash repairs, like areas that have been resprayed.
  • Uneven tread on tyres, and rust or fluid leaks

Test drive

  • Take the car for a test drive and see how it runs. Check how smoothly it steers, accelerates and brakes, changes gears and handles corners.
  • It’s a good idea to arrange an independent inspection by a qualified mechanic.

History check

  • If you’re ready to make an offer, make sure there’s no outstanding debt on the vehicle. The easiest way is to buy a report at Car History. It’ll tell you if the car has any outstanding financial liability, its sales history, rego status, and any insurance claims.

Insurance

Once you’ve found the right car and it ticks all the boxes, make sure to insure your car before you drive away.
